In order to check the progress during the course of study, the learner should take up Tutor Marked Assignments (TMAs) seriously. The assignments would be a part of continuous internal assessment and also serve as an academic tool to prompt the learner to take part in the Personnel Contact Programmes (PCPs) and develop rapport between the learner and the tutors at the Study Centres. Purpose of Nios Assignment:

 Internal Assessment: It acts as home-based coursework designed to help you develop regular study habits and receive feedback from teachers before final examinations.

Marks Distribution: If a theory subject is worth 100 marks overall, the final written exam counts for 80 marks and the TMA file accounts for 20 marks.

When to submit TMA NIOS?

Submit your NIOS Tutor Marked Assignment (TMA) by July 31 for the October/November exams, and by January 31 for the April/May exams. Always check the official website as NIOS occasionally extends these deadlines with or without late fees

Structure of a NIOS TMA Question Paper

Each subject’s TMA question booklet contains 6 questions based on different chapters: [1, 2]

• Questions 1–3: Short-answer questions (2 marks each).
• Questions 4–5: Long-answer questions (4 marks each).
• Question 6: A practical or project-based application task (6 marks).
• Note: Every single question gives you two optional choices (A or B), but you only need to attempt one

How to Prepare a TMA File

Download Questions: Access the assignment booklets via your student login on the official NIOS SDMIS Portal.

Handwrite Answers: You must write out the questions and answers by hand on A4-size ruled sheets (preferably single-side lined, single-side blank). [1, 2, 3]

Use the Right Ink: Use a black pen for writing the questions and a blue pen for the answers. [1]

Create a Cover Page: The very first page of your file must clearly outline your student details:

• Student Name & Enrollment Number
• Subject Name & Subject Code
• AI / Study Centre Name & Code
• Current Examination Session

Submission Process

Once your handwritten physical file is ready, you must scan it page by page using a mobile document scanner to convert it into a single PDF file per subject (with a file size under 5 MB). This digital TMA file is then uploaded straight onto your NIOS Learner Dashboard.

Key Nios Assignment Submission Deadlines for 2026

• October/November 2026 Exams:
  • Last Date (without late fee): July 31, 2026
  • Last Date (with late fee): August 15, 2026 (subject to applicable penalties and official updates).

Missing the official submission deadline (which typically ends in January for April exams and July for October exams) carries a heavy late fee penalty of ₹1500 per subject

Can I submit TMA after due date?

You can still upload TMA after the due date with a late fee of ₹1500 per subject. The late upload facility is available within one month of result declaration.
